The Cook County Board approved a $1.1 million malpracticesettlement Monday in a suit filed by a Florida woman who sufferedpermanent brain damage from seizures suffered as she prepared to givebirth at County Hospital.
The 1987 incident occurred while the woman, Carmen Santana, 32,was visiting an aunt here. Circuit Judge Leonard Grazian hadrecommended the settlement.
Earlier, the board postponed voting on a proposal by boardPresident John Stroger to award a $7.3 million contract to twoChicago companies to oversee construction of a new 464-bed, $542million County Hospital.
